n today’s digitally connected world, corporate communication is one of the key factors determining whether companies achieve a good or poor performance, whether they thrive or the other way around.

Many CEOs are of the view that effective communication allows customers to learn about a company's products or services and what makes brands unique compared to their competitors.

Through effective communication, management and employees can coordinate their activities to ensure that the entire organization is marching toward the same strategic goals.

That’s why many companies, including state-owned companies in Indonesia, continue to build effective communication.

The issue of the importance of effective corporate communication came to the fore when state-owned enterprises (BUMN/SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir awarded several companies at the BUMN Corporate Communications & Sustainability Summit (BCOMSS) 2020 in Jakarta on Jan. 31.

The prestigious awards, which fall into six categories, were bestowed on SOEs that are most valuable, most potential and most promising in running communication and CSR programs in 2020.

PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BRI) was named Best of the Best Communications in the BCOMSS 2020.

Erick said in a welcoming address that communication was very important because it reflected trust. “Thanks to good communication, the market’s trust in the SOEs has incredibly been restored. This is reflected in the prices of the SOEs’ shares at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (ISX),” he said.

The minister said that a good perception, not building an image, was developed through direct implementation (of the programs) with results that could be felt by the public.

BRI, state-owned bank with assets of Rp 1,500 trillion, was named the champion at the BCOMSS 2020, surpassing 45 other SOEs. Based on the assessment, BRI got the best mark among the state-owned companies for running a sustainable communication program.

Besides, BRI was also named Gold Winner in the category Social Media and Corporate Campaign for its program “Pakai Masker Itu Keren” (Wearing a Mask Is Cool”.

With the concept Pro-People, Pro-Planet and Pro-Profit, BRI not only asks people to adhere to health protocols, including wearing a mask, but also raises their welfare.

The integrated campaign in the social media, #PakaiMaskerItuKeren, managed to collect 2,468 designs and revived the micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) economic activities in rural areas by producing masks. As many as 125,000 masks were produced based on the design competition.

The awards were given following a thorough assessment by several judges who are experts in communication and sustainable practices. They include SOE Minister Erick Thohir, SOE Ministry Special Staff Member Arya Sinulingga, Senior Journalist Najwa Shihab, Academician and Communication Practitioner Effendi Ghazali and two academicians and sustainability practitioners, Maria N. Radyati and Juliati Ansye Sopacua.

“I highly appreciate the award, because communication is the tip of a spear to deliver every message. Using multimedia to deliver the right innovation programs and communication solutions is a must in these current difficult times. Through the actions, we can hopefully soon revive and get out of the hard times,” said BRI President Director Sunarso.

The two awards that BRI earned in early 2021 show that BRI has made an optimal effort to maintain good and effective communication with its stakeholders, the general public, customers, regulators and all parties related to the company. Apart from that, BRI maintains a pattern of effective and open communication through various kinds of media, both mass media and social media, and delivers enlightening information useful to the public at large.
