arlier this year, the world was shocked by the outbreak of a new virus that began in the province of Wuhan, China. The coronavirus, which causes a disease called COVID-19, has since infected more than 71,000 people around the world, mostly in mainland China, and killed 1,873, including five outside mainland China, according to CNN reports as of Feb. 18.

Cases have been detected in at least 30 countries and regions outside mainland China, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Australia and the United States. The virus might even have spread to Indonesia as well.

Initially, COVID-19 was thought to move only from animals to humans. However, it has now been proven that the virus can be transmitted from human to human and spread through the air. This means the potential for virus contraction is even greater.

Facts on coronavirus

What is COVID-19?

The virus that causes COVID-19 is part of the coronavirus type. This virus is zoonotic, which means it is transmitted not only from animals to humans, but also human to human.

How does coronavirus spread?

Within 10 years, coronaviruses have mutated into dangerous types, namely MERS and SARS. This latest mutation of the virus can spread in several ways:

Contact with animals: Some scientists believe that SARS originated from civet cats, which are widely available in China, while MERS originated from camels. COVID-19 is believed to be sourced from a livestock market.

Spread by air: The virus can spread through droplets released from coughing or sneezing.

Human touch: Shaking hands or touching someone who is infected can increase the risk of being infected.

Dirt: Contact with human feces can also cause a person to become infected with the virus, but very rarely.

Who are vulnerable to this coronavirus?

People with weak immune systems such as infants, children, elderly people, pregnant women and those with pre-existing health problems (e.g. pneumonia) are very vulnerable to COVID-19 infection.

What are the simple steps to help minimize coronavirus infections?

There is not yet any effective vaccine to prevent COVID-19. However, there are simple steps to help minimize the risks of contracting it:

Wash hands regularly: Your hands touch many places and objects wherever you go. Wash your hands with water, soap and/or antiseptic for 20 seconds.

Avoid physical contact with infected people: If you need to engage with those who have been medically proven to have contracted coronavirus, use the necessary protective measures because coronavirus can spread by direct physical contact.

Clean animal waste: Be sure to regularly clear your pet's waste as the coronavirus can also infect animals.

Refrain from visiting regions where the virus has broken out: It is advisable not to travel to places where the pandemic is still prevalent. Whenever possible, avoid visiting public places because the risks of you being exposed to the virus will be higher.

Keep your body healthy: Your immune system plays an important role keeping you out of the virus’ reach. Since your immune system is directly related to the fitness of your body, living a healthy life is essential. Eat nutritious food, drink water regularly, get enough sleep, and do physical exercises to help keep you fit.

Eat well-cooked food: Cook food well, since a virus may infect the ingredients that are not properly prepared.

Higienis Indonesia

Higienis Indonesia, known as a specialist in the field of health and hygienic solutions, believes living in a healthy indoor environment can minimize the risks of contracting viruses.

Blueair as part of the solution                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      What about the rooms you live in? On average, 90 percent of daily activities are done indoors, and indoor air can be five times more polluted than outdoor air. All kinds of pollutants, including viruses, can circulate freely where you spend most of your time -- at home, school, office or the gym.

Air purification

Creating clean air in a room is absolutely necessary. Installing a ventilation system can help produce adequate air exchange, though it remains possible that pollutants can still enter the room.

The best way to stop viruses in the air is to install an air purifier. Choose an air purifier that is able to filter out 99.9 percent of pollutants as small as 0.1 micron, including H1N1, an earlier strain of coronavirus similar to COVID-19.

Blueair creates clean air

Equipped with HEPASilentTM technology and combining highly efficient HEPA filtration with electrostatic ionizers, Blueair is proven to be able to get rid of at least 12 types of bacteria and viruses as proven during a test conducted by the Guangzhou Testing Center of Industrial Microbiology and the Guangzhou CAS Test Technical Services Co., Ltd, China.

Blueair’s advantages

As one of the most award-winning air purifiers, Blueair has a unique advantage compared with others on the market, because of its ability to effectively eliminate bacteria and viruses while producing some of the highest Clean Air Delivery Rates (CADR). HEPASilentTM technology combines the best of mechanical filtering and ionizing to effectively kill and remove 99.9 percent of viruses and bacteria from the air in just 60 minutes.

Blueair’s electrostatic ionizer

Unlike most air purifiers on the market that employ only mechanical filtering, Blueair's patented hybrid technology combines mechanical filtration and an electrostatic ionizer. The polluted air is first charged with ions so that very small particles stick as they pass through opposing-charge filtration fibers consisting of different sizes and layers.

Ozone-free

Filter media of different sizes and layers ensure that all microscopic particles are filtered and trapped. The result is a high level of clean air production, or CADR, free from both pollutants and microorganisms, namely viruses and disease-carrying bacteria.

All the ionization occurs within the unit, so that the resulting air is ozone-free.

Blueair filter media is also hydrophobic, which ensures the captured germs do not survive.
