he recent power failure across Java and Bali made headlines not only locally but also internationally. It served as a reminder of the importance of reliable energy supply to ensure power continuity. While the world’s attention has been focusing on new and renewable energy sources as the future of energy, the fact remains that oil and gas are still the primary energy sources we rely on.
Data from the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business (SKK Migas), shows that at least up to 2050, oil and gas will still be the energy sources the nation relies on. It is projected that up to 2050, oil and gas will make up 44 percent of the energy mix, followed by coal at 25 percent and renewable energy at 31 percent. This confirms the significant role the oil and gas industry plays in contributing to national energy security.
In maintaining a reliable energy supply, oil and gas companies depend on exploration activities and keeping the current production at optimum yield. SKK Migas is optimistic that investment in the upstream oil and gas industry in Indonesia will rise, as the government announces the regular tender for the third phase of oil and gas working areas. At minimum, 42 main oil and gas projects with a total investment of US$43.3 billion should be realized by 2027. These projects are expected to produce a total of 1.1 million barrels of oil equivalent (MBOE) consisting of 92.1 thousand barrels of oil and 6.1 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas. This offers positivity for the industry, with rising confidence among potential investors. Among these, four of the projects are national strategic projects for the upstream oil and gas sector aimed at increasing production to meet the rising demand.
Another strategy next to exploration is to ensure that the existing production is fully optimized. Technology plays a crucial role in helping the industry increase the recovery factor. One approach is the application of Enhanced Oil Recovery – EOR, the basic idea of which is to boost the production of mature basins. Various approaches in EOR application include thermal recovery, gas injection and chemical injection. One example of a success story in EOR application is by Chevron Pacific Indonesia, which has engaged EOR to develop the oil recovery in Duri Utara Area 13, using steam injection. Chevron managed to prolong the life span of Lapangan Duri – a world-renowned oil field with the largest steam injection, while increasing production by 17,000 bpd.
Addressing the latest issues in the oil and gas industry is the 43rd IPA Convention and Exhibition, organized by the Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA). This annual event is fully supported by the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, Finance Ministry, Foreign Ministry and SKK Migas. A line-up of high-profile local and overseas speakers is ready to provide insights and share experiences with the convention participants. Whereas the exhibition presents the latest technology and solutions for the upstream oil and gas industry.
“The 43rd IPA Convex 2019 will feature three plenary sessions, one special session and two technology sessions. We are organizing new activities as well this year, the Breakfast Meeting – a new agenda with the support of SKK Migas, this meeting is to share information about the oil and gas industry landscape in Indonesia, and open up networking opportunities; the CSR Pavilion, which will feature community service activities by oil and gas companies, and also PetroChallenge, which is exciting, as we will invite university students to learn about exploration in oil and gas while competing in a knowledge and fun challenge using the latest software technology,” said Hanny Denalda, the chairperson of IPA Convex 2019.
“Apart from business, IPA Convex also is a place where oil and gas professionals get recognized for their talent. Our program, IPA Voice, is proven to be a great pull, as we audition the best of the best in singing talent. If you want refreshing knowledge about geotourism and tips on how to score your job interview, you may join the Jam Sessions. Admission to IPA Convex 2019 exhibition is free by registration, either pre-registration online or registering on site during the event. We invite all oil and gas professionals, academics and those in the supply side of the oil and gas industry to join us in this official annual conference of the IPA. Hopefully, IPA Convex 2019 will benefit the industry,” concluded Hanny.
The IPA aims to be the voice of the upstream oil and gas industry, bridging the communication between the industry and the government. Every year, the IPA organizes IPA Convex as a platform for the industry to exchange information, get industry updates and network with their peers. IPA Convex will be held from Sept. 4-6 at the Jakarta Convention Center. For more information, please visit https://convex.ipa.or.id
