Coordinating Minister: Asian Para Games 2018 on target

oordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK) Puan Maharani recently led an inter-ministerial coordination meeting on preparations for the Asian Para Games 2018 at her office.

The “Mach 9” meeting primarily discussed progress on preparations, infrastructure and athletes.

"God willing, everything related to progress, facilities and infrastructure are on target," the coordinating minister said at a press conference after the meeting.

The infrastructure is being readied in conjunction with those for the Asian Games, while venues and accommodate still require some adjustment to fulfill the needs of disabled athletes. The office of the coordinating minister is working with the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) to ensure that everything is running well.

Puan also stated that efficiency, synchronization and synergy would be maintained between the Asian Games and the succeeding event of the Para Asian Games.

"Up until now, we have been able to synchronize the two Games. This means that we will also to using the athletes’ lodging in Kemayoran," she said.

Nevertheless, the organizing committee would make adjustments to the facilities so that they catered to the needs of disabled athletes, including the floor and the elevators.

"With the efficiency, synchronization and synergy between the two Games, we can make use of the Asian Games facilities for the Para Asian Games," Puan stated.

As for the event itself, the coordinating minister expressed hope that Indonesian para athletes could win medals and achieve the target. The Mach 9 meeting also discussed preparations for the test events planned for June 30-July 3.

The Asian Para Games 2018 will be held on Oct. 6-13, featuring 18 sports in 576 events and involving an estimated 5,000 athletes.

The Para Games will host competitive events in archery, athletics, badminton, boccia, chess, goal ball, lawn ball, para cycling, judo, weight lifting, shooting, swimming, 10-pin bowling, table tennis, wheelchair volleyball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing and wheelchair tennis.

Present at the meeting were Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi, Health Minister NilaMoeloek, INAPGOC Chairman RajaSaptaOktohari, NPCChairman SemmyMarbun, and representatives from the State Secretariat, Communication and Information Ministry, Social Affairs Ministry, Culture and Education Ministry, Public Works and Housing Ministry, Transportation Ministry, National Development Planning Ministry/National Development Planning Board, the Foreign Ministry, the National Police, Bank Indonesia and the Jakarta administration.
