A

s in any other industry, sustainability is at the forefront of the conversation in business, being both a part of regulations and a form of corporate responsibility to society and the environment.

Allianz Indonesia, as part of the leading global insurance group Allianz Group, has a strong commitment to sustainability. Allianz Group itself was selected as the “Leading Sustainable Insurer” based on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2021.

As part of a greater discussion on sustainability and the impact of climate change on insurance, Allianz Indonesia recently attended a webinar organized by the OJK Institute titled “Dampak Perubahan Iklim terhadap Aspek Pembiayaan dan Premi Asuransi Berdasarkan Ekonomi Hijau” (The Impact of Climate Change on Insurance Financing and Premiums Based on Green Economy).

Speaking at the webinar, Allianz Life Indonesia country manager & president director David Nolan noted that communities would benefit from positive impacts if the impact of climate change could be reduced, such as being able to live a healthier life.

“In addition to reducing the need for hospitals and increasing life expectancy, healthier people can make insurance premiums cheaper and affordable so that more people have insurance protection. This is in line with our commitment to protect more Indonesians,” he said.

Currently, only 3 percent of the Indonesian population own insurance protection. In addition, Indonesia is also prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires and floods due to its location in the so-called “ring of fire”.

“There are various risks that must be mitigated by the Indonesian people. If we can reduce the impact on the environment such as by using electric vehicles, and reducing the use of paper or electricity, then the impact of natural disasters can be further reduced. This is very important because of the number of Indonesians who do not have insurance protection,” David concluded.

Allianz Indonesia itself has also carried out various initiatives that support the environment and increase public awareness, such as investing in mini-hydro power plant projects and conducting campaigns for the use of e-policy and digital service tools to customers. Allianz is also committed to reducing financing and cooperation with businesses that use coal, especially for the general insurance portfolio.

Internally, Allianz Indonesia is also committed to reducing the amount of paper usage by 20 percent, electricity consumption by 5 percent and limiting the amount of carbon emissions per employee to 2 tons. In addition, through various corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, Allianz Indonesia has increased public awareness of the environment, such as collecting more than 2 tons of inorganic waste as of January 2022 and planting more than 10,000 mangrove trees with employees as volunteers.
