The President says that if not by today, he will choose his nominees for BI Governor Perry Warjiyo's successor by Wednesday.
resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said on Tuesday that he had a list of candidates to succeed incumbent Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo, who was expected to step down in May.
On the sidelines of a visit to Ciliwung, East Jakarta, Jokowi told reporters that he would decide on who to nominate for the central bank governorship on Wednesday at the latest.
“We will make a decision if not today, then tomorrow. I already have the names of the candidates,” the President said.
Under the newly passed Law No. 4/2023 on financial sector development and strengthening, the President is obligated to submit the names of candidates for the central bank governorship to the House of Representatives three months before the current governor’s term ends.
Lawmakers had expected Jokowi to submit the candidates’ names by the third week of this month.
Perry, who has been BI governor since May 2018, was the sole candidate Jokowi proposed to the House, which confirmed his appointment following a hearing in late March 2018.
Potential candidates to succeed Perry include Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and the central bank’s senior deputy governor, Destry Damayanti.
