International relations analysts have called for caution in Indonesia and the region after NATO declared China a strategic challenge, saying it was only a formal acknowledgment of the ongoing situation in the Indo-Pacific.

Tetsuya Yamagami has also said he "made multiple guns," according to the sources. The police have searched his home in the western city of Nara, confiscating guns similar to the apparently homemade one found at the scene after Abe was shot Friday while delivering a stump speech on a street in the city.

Protesters, many wrapped in the Sri Lanka flag, swarmed into his whitewashed colonial-era residence on Saturday, jumped into the swimming pool and sat on a four-poster bed. Abe was speaking at a campaign rally in the western region of Nara when the attack occurred.

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving leader, died on Friday after being shot while campaigning for a parliamentary election, an official from his political party said.

"This is a very, very sad moment," Blinken told reporters at a G20 meeting in Bali, saying the United States was "deeply saddened and deeply concerned".

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi will meet Wong on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Bali on Friday evening, the first meeting between foreign ministers of the major trading partners in three years.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will use the gathering -- which is a prelude to a leaders' summit in November -- to lobby allies that have been at odds with its position on Ukraine, such as India, to pull away from Moscow.  But his hopes of a united Western front against Russian aggression were dealt a blow after British Foreign Minister Liz Truss pulled out of the meeting at the last minute, according to a diplomat. Truss would not attend talks with her counterparts on Friday and will instead be replaced by a senior British official, the diplomat told AFP, without specifying when she would be leaving Bali. Truss cut her trip short after Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned as the leader of his Conservative party on Thursday, with British media reporting she would fly home early to rally support for a leadership bid. Beijing has refused to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine and has been accused of providing diplomatic cover for the Kremlin by blasting Western sanctions and arms sales to Kyiv.  Blinken is expected to reiterate warnings to Beijing about its support for Russia at Saturday's talks with Wang. China pursues an independent foreign policy toward Russia and both reject interference from what they have called "third parties". A meeting between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in February ended with the pair declaring a "new era" of international relations with "no limits" to their relationship.  Xi assured Putin of China's support for Russian "sovereignty and security" in a phone call last month. The United States swiftly weighed in, condemning China for "investing in close ties to Russia" despite claiming to be neutral.

The pair were pictured holding a bilateral meeting on the Indonesian resort island as the world's top economies gather to discuss the most pressing global issues on Friday, with the Ukraine war at the top of the agenda.

The latest executions come after the hanging of a mentally disabled man in April sparked international outrage, with the European Union and United Nations among those speaking out against it. 

Higher case counts were reported in all of the 47 prefectures in the country, with cases more than doubling in Tokyo and Osaka and Kanagawa prefectures compared with the week before.

Speaking at a briefing to the foreign diplomatic corps on Wednesday, Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn said he asked the Russian minister to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Regional Forum and other related meetings.

It also exceeded the 11,504 cases recorded last Tuesday (June 28), which had been the highest daily number of infections since March 22, when it was over 13,000.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken are set to attend the meeting in the resort town of Nusa Dua, where the G-20 ministers on Friday will also discuss cooperation in dealing with rising global inflation. A Lavrov-Blinken bilateral meeting is not expected, according to the US State Department.
