ndonesia and China will resume joint exercises and training, which previously were paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as both countries eye strengthening military cooperation.

During his visit to Xi’an in China on Friday, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto reiterated hope that bilateral ties between Indonesia and China in security and defense will continue to grow stronger and both countries will maintain close strategic communication.

“Both sides agreed to continue cooperation in education and joint-military training, which had been temporarily halted since the COVID-19 pandemic began,” Prabowo said as quoted in an official statement published on the ministry website.

Prabowo thanked his Chinese counterpart for maintaining cooperation between the two countries — which he said has “grown quite dynamic” — as he recalled defense and security cooperation between the two countries, ranging from joint-naval exercises, training programs for military officers and think tanks, practical cooperation in fighting transnational crimes and disaster prevention.

“With the collaborative efforts of both parties, we have started a journey of rapid growth. I want to thank China for the continuous support given to Indonesia so far," Prabowo said.

In the statement, Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe was quoted saying that the two countries should play a greater role in maintaining regional security and stability as the Asia-Pacific region is facing complex challenges.
