Chinese President Xi Jinping returned to the global stage after two years of pandemic isolation at the Group of 20 Summit in Bali, where he sought to address pressing global issues and improve ties with both allies and nemeses alike.
On Monday, Xi held his first in-person meeting with United States President Joe Biden, during which the two sought to lower the temperature between the US and China.
While the meeting was largely seen as choreographed, with both leaders shaking hands and smiling to the camera, “it sent a reassuring message and the Chinese readout was positively glowing. That in itself shows both sides' interest in improving ties," said Yun Sun, director the China program at the Stimson Center in Washington, as quoted by AFP.
After meeting Biden, Xi met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday. He is also scheduled to meet with the summit’s host, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Wednesday.

Following their meeting, Xi and Macron said they agreed it was urgent to de-escalate the conflict in Ukraine and reaffirmed their position on preventing the use of nuclear arms there, the French president said.
