T

he US government said Wednesday it wants to further deepen bilateral cooperation with South Korea as it congratulated opposition candidate Yoon Suk Yeol on his win in the country's presidential election.

"The alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea, our economies and our people is ironclad," a State Department spokesperson said in a statement, adding that US President Joe Biden "looks forward to working with the new administration to further expand our close cooperation."

The victory by Yoon of the conservative People Power Party brings an end to five years of progressive rule under South Korean President Moon Jae In. The new president will take office on May 10 and serve a single five-year term.

The Biden administration is likely to seek to strengthen bilateral ties as well as trilateral ties involving Japan in the face of North Korea's nuclear and missile threats and China's growing assertiveness in the region.

The change in the South Korean administration is raising expectations of increased engagement with the United States and Japan, with Yoon having called for stronger trilateral ties even as relations between the two Asian countries remain soured over wartime history issues.

Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Thursday congratulated Yoon Suk Yeol on winning South Korea's presidential election, expressing hope to improve a bilateral relationship that has been strained over wartime issues.

"I intend to closely work with the new president to improve Japan-South Korea ties," Kishida told reporters, underscoring that a healthy relationship between the neighboring countries is crucial for global peace and stability.
