Thousands of sacks have been prepared in North Jakarta to collect domestic waste from residents in the area.

Lambas Sigalingging, who heads North Jakarta’s waterbody management unit, said the measure had been taken to prevent people from throwing their trash into the river, as this would cover the river’s surface and block its current.

“Please don’t throw your trash into the river. Put it in the sacks, and we’ll pick them up later. We should work together to preserve the environment,” he said on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Lambas said his staff would distribute the sacks to houses located by the river.

“We have around 3,000 sacks at our post. We’ll give them to the residents for free,” he added.

According to Lambas, trash in the river was not the main cause of flooding, but it would be better to keep the river clean anyway.

With the rainy season starting in western Java, massive amounts of trash have been clogging up sluice gates in Greater Jakarta. (vla)
