overnor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said on Sunday that his administration would no longer issue building permits in Condet subdistrict, East Jakarta, to ensure the preservation of the area as a heritage site, beritajakarta.com has reported.
“We support the residents’ efforts to return the area to its original function. We can issue a gubernatorial decree [for the policy], if necessary,” he said at a meeting with the residents at the salak plantation in Condet.
Condet was once famous for its local variety of the snake-skin fruit, durian, jamblang (black plum) and other varieties of fruit planted by residents. Lined with Betawi-style houses, the area was named a heritage site during the Ali Sadikin administration.
