he South Jakarta District Court has sentenced two accomplices of disgraced police general Ferdy Sambo to 15 and 13 years in prison, respectively, for abetting in the murder of Ferdy’s aide-de-camp Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat.
The sentences go well beyond the eight years demanded by prosecutors for each defendant.
In two separate trials on Tuesday, judges found Ferdy’s chauffeur Kuat Ma’ruf and another aide-de-camp Ricky Rizal guilty of participating in the plot to murder Yosua, whose death in July was initially made to look like the result of a shootout.
The judges said Kuat and Ricky’s involvement in the murder had started in Ferdy’s house in Magelang, Central Java, on July 7, a day before Yosua was murdered in Jakarta. Kuat, a civilian, had been taking care of Ferdy’s children at the house, while Ricky, a police brigadier, had been guarding it.
The three-member bench in Kuat’s trial said he had encountered Yosua leaving the private quarters of Ferdy’s wife Putri Chandrawathi while Ferdy was away in Jakarta.
Judge Morgan Simanjuntak said Kuat had chased Yosua out of the house with a kitchen knife in his hand, threatening that Yosua would be “finished by the Magelang squad” if he was ever found in Putri’s quarters again.
Kuat then, Morgan said, urged Putri to tell Ferdy about her “altercation” with Yosua so that there would be “no thorns in their marriage".
