afety experts are calling on the government to review all public venues across the country following the fatal human crush on Saturday at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, East Java, one of the world’s worst soccer stadium disasters in recent decades.
Authorities said at least 131 people, among them 33 minors, were killed on Saturday as they fled an overcrowded stadium after police fired tear gas to disperse supporters of Arema FC, who had invaded the pitch following the home team’s defeat to rival Persebaya Surabaya.
Soehatman Ramli, chairman of the World Safety Organization (WSO) Indonesia, said the government should oblige operators of all venues that hosted public events, from sports to entertainment, to have emergency response plans in place.
These plans should include evacuation routes and crowd management for controlling panic situations, he stressed.
“For sports venues, this is regulated under Law No. 11/2022 on sports, as well as by the FIFA Stadium Safety and Security Regulations,” Soehatman told an online discussion on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo ordered a “complete audit” of stadiums nationwide to be completed within a month to ensure they complied with safety and security regulations. He also urged that the investigation by a team of soccer experts, academics and government officials be concluded as soon as possible.
"I want to know the root of the problem that caused this tragedy so we can get the best solution," he told reporters outside Saiful Anwar Hospital in Malang. "I will order the Public Works and Housing Ministry to audit all stadiums used for the league," he said, referring to the country’s top-tier soccer league, Liga 1.
