View all search resultsThe government says it has managed to navigate the “dynamic” global situation and hold a conducive penultimate Group of 20 Sherpa meeting, adding that significant progress has been made in formulating the G20 leaders’ declaration, despite rising global tension.
G20 co-sherpa Edi Prio Pambudi said on Wednesday that delegates from all 20 members were present during the third Sherpa meeting, which was held from Monday until Wednesday in Yogyakarta, and that all members “provided their contribution toward formulating the leaders declaration.”
“We felt [during the meeting] that there was an atmosphere of mutual support,” Edi, who is also the deputy coordinating economic minister, told reporters. “As we know, the tradition of the G20 forum is to look for solutions, so there was no tense atmosphere, we kept everything in a condition of mutual respect.”
Edi said that the formulation of the leaders declaration had reached a half-way point, despite some initially “tough” discussions due to the geopolitical tension. He also said that Indonesia remained confident that its presidency will result in a completed leaders' declaration by the upcoming G20 Summit in Bali in November.
The leaders declaration – which is part-and-parcel of all G20 summits – will detail the shared commitments of G20 members, based on the communiqué delivered by the G20 working groups.
“[When] we discussed the geopolitical situation, we would try to find a way out that is agreeable for all parties. This was not easy,” Edi said. “But, even countries like Russia, China and the United States, have all given their support in terms of finding an [agreeable] solution.”
He went on to say that Indonesia’s “Bebas Aktif” (independent and active) foreign policy principle had been successful in consolidating all members' interests, and that there were no walk-outs during the discussion.
