n the 2019 legislative election, the Golkar Party won 12.31 percent of the vote, putting it in third place after the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) with 19.33 percent and the Gerindra Party (12.57 percent). Golkar, however, is projected to win the second-most seats at the House of Representatives.

The party is currently embroiled in infighting over its chairmanship in the lead-up to its national meeting, slated for December. In an interview with The Jakarta Post, Golkar chairman Airlangga Hartarto shared his views on the latest developments and challenges facing the party. The following are excerpts from the interview with the Post’s Imanuddin Razak, Sita W. Dewi, Ghina Ghaliya and Fachrul Sidiq.

Question: (Senior member and House speaker) Bambang Soesatyo has challenged your chairmanship and claims to have secured support from Golkar officials at the subnational levels. Have you been rallying for support too?

Answer: I have no comment on that. You can ask him directly. I am the current chairman. I certainly get support from the party members at the local level.

Bambang Soesatyo has started his campaign for the chairmanship. Have there been talks within your closest circle about this?

Go ahead. It’s [part of] the dynamics within the party.

Are you confident of being reelected?
