Police say the unemployed 41-year-old admits shooting Abe with a homemade gun at a campaign event on Friday, but what else do we know about the suspect so far?

Blinken made the comments at a news conference on the Indonesian's island of Bali after the talks with Wang that lasted a little over five hours, Reuters reported.

Sunak resigned his role as Chancellor of the Exchequer late Tuesday, prompting dozens of more junior colleagues to follow suit in the subsequent 36 hours and forcing his ex-boss to then quit as leader of the ruling Conservatives on Thursday.

"The G-7's plan to boycott Russia at the G-20 has failed," foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on messaging app Telegram.

Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, has also said he had a grudge against a "specific organization" -- possibly the religious group -- that he believed was linked to Abe, according to the police.

US officials say Blinken's meeting with Wang in Bali including a morning session of talks and a working lunch, is aimed at keeping the difficult US relationship with China stable and preventing it from veering inadvertently into conflict. 

Abe was speaking at a campaign rally in the western region of Nara when the attack occurred.

"To our Russian colleagues: Ukraine is not your country. Its grain is not your grain. Why are you blocking the ports? You should let the grain out," said Blinken, according to a Western official present.

Diplomats said Lavrov later also left an afternoon session before a virtual appearance by Ukraine's foreign minister and was not present as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned Russia in the closed-door meeting in Bali.

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving leader, died on Friday after being shot while campaigning for a parliamentary election, an official from his political party said.

"This is a very, very sad moment," Blinken told reporters at a G20 meeting in Bali, saying the United States was "deeply saddened and deeply concerned".

"During the discussion, Western partners avoided following the mandate of the G20, from dealing with issues of the world economy," Lavrov said.

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi will meet Wong on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Bali on Friday evening, the first meeting between foreign ministers of the major trading partners in three years.

The buildup to the gathering on the Indonesian island of Bali has been dominated by the war and its impact on the global economy, with top officials from Western countries and Japan stressing it would not be "business as usual" at the forum.

National broadcaster NHK said a man in his 40s had been arrested for attempted murder and a gun had been confiscated from him, citing police sources.

Shinzo was attacked and left bleeding at a campaign event in the Nara region on Friday, local media has reported.

The world's two largest economies are at loggerheads over a series of contentious issues, from the status of Chinese-claimed Taiwan and Russia's invasion of Ukraine to a broader contest for influence in the Asia Pacific.

His remarks came as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov prepared for a closed-door foreign ministers' meeting at a G20 gathering in Indonesia on Friday - the first time Putin's top diplomat will come face-to-face with the most vocal opponents of the invasion of Ukraine since it began in February.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will use the gathering -- which is a prelude to a leaders' summit in November -- to lobby allies that have been at odds with its position on Ukraine, such as India, to pull away from Moscow.  But his hopes of a united Western front against Russian aggression were dealt a blow after British Foreign Minister Liz Truss pulled out of the meeting at the last minute, according to a diplomat. Truss would not attend talks with her counterparts on Friday and will instead be replaced by a senior British official, the diplomat told AFP, without specifying when she would be leaving Bali. Truss cut her trip short after Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned as the leader of his Conservative party on Thursday, with British media reporting she would fly home early to rally support for a leadership bid. Beijing has refused to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine and has been accused of providing diplomatic cover for the Kremlin by blasting Western sanctions and arms sales to Kyiv.  Blinken is expected to reiterate warnings to Beijing about its support for Russia at Saturday's talks with Wang. China pursues an independent foreign policy toward Russia and both reject interference from what they have called "third parties". A meeting between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in February ended with the pair declaring a "new era" of international relations with "no limits" to their relationship.  Xi assured Putin of China's support for Russian "sovereignty and security" in a phone call last month. The United States swiftly weighed in, condemning China for "investing in close ties to Russia" despite claiming to be neutral.

Johnson was expected to announce his resignation after he was abandoned by ministers and his Conservative Party's lawmakers who said he was no longer fit to govern. The Kremlin said it too was no fan of the British leader, whose parents named him Boris after a White Russian emigre.
