“There is already an agreement with the ministry regarding the handing out of this system. Usually, AQMS systems are given to areas with many forests. However, Yogyakarta is considered eligible to operate this system,” Suyana, the head of the Yogyakarta Environment Agency, told Antara on Thursday.

The placement of the system at the Yogyakarta Environment Agency headquarters is perceived as optimal for measuring air quality as it is close to a residential area, a business district and the Balai Yasa train depot.

“There are shops and several offices around our headquarters, such as the Gondokusuman subdistrict office and the Subdistrict Military Command (Koramil) office. I think this is the right location for air quality to be measured,” said Suyana.

He went on to say that if the system was installed at Titik Nol (Zero Point), it could only measure the air quality of the road and not of residential areas.

With the new system, air quality can be monitored by the Yogyakarta Environment Agency, the Yogyakarta provincial administration and the Environment and Forestry Ministry.

“This system is quite expensive, priced at Rp 2 billion (US$142,117). So far we have only received the system without monitors that display the measurement, which could be placed in public areas so that it could be accessible to many people,” Suyana said.

To address this, the agency will attempt to connect the system to the Jogja Smart Service (JSS), an application owned by the Yogyakarta administration that is accessible to the public.

“The system would be installed this year, and soon after that, we will coordinate with the communications, information and coding agency to sync the air-quality monitoring results with the city’s smart system,” Suyana said.
